Logic

Logic has made a name for himself.  He has crafted his way into the industry by dropping fire mixtape after mixtape.  Now with over a million streams and downloads and over 20 million video plays recognized as a one of the top lyricists on underground playlists.  He takes on his bi-racial background (Black father\White mother) in his music to address the racism, appropriation concepts and simple hating he was bound to encounter.  My son Masai is a huge Logic fan so I thought I’d give him the opportunity to create a music column article on Logic’s career and back story.

Born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, Logic was born January 22, 1990 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He grew up in a life that definitely was not considered easy.  Logic’s mother and father both suffered from crack addiction and alcoholism. His brothers both sold crack, even selling it to their own father at one point. His father left him at a young age. Not the easiest foundation to build your life on. Yet, Logic used what he witnessed as an example of the things to stay away from.  Through it all he pursued his love for music, using his free time to write songs.

Logic with early mentor Solomon Taylor

Logic began to develop an interest in rap after hearing the soundtrack from the movie Kill Bill at the age of 15.  The score featured music from RZA and Wu-Tang Clan. He started listening to Wu-Tang and dug deeper and deeper into hip-hop from there. Logic met Solomon Taylor, his mentor, at the age of 13 and Taylor later encouraged and supported him in his quest for music.  He would get beat CDs for Logic to write to and sharpen his lyric skills.  By age 17 Logic was working two jobs but would still go home and begin working on music around 2AM.

Before Logic was “Logic”, he went by the name Psychological because he liked that the name involved the complex structure of the mind.

Eventually he shortened his stage name to Logic, which is the science of reasoning, to broaden his horizons.

Logic released his first official mixtape, Young, Broke, and Infamous on December 17, 2010.  Following its release, he released two videos, "Stain in the Game" and "Backpack".  The mixtape caught Chris Zarou’s ear (Visionary Music Group), who wanted Logic to be a part of his independent record label. Logic released his second mixtape, Young Sinatra on September 19, 2011. Young Sinatra received a massive amount of positive feedback from fans and underground music sites all over the web. He released music videos for songs "Mind of Logic,", "All I Do" and "Prime". ”All I Do” was the first of Logic’s videos to hit over one million views on YouTube.  Billboard declared Logic as the Next Big Sound on March 15, 2012, meaning he was the fastest growing artist across the internet when it came to gaining fans. On March 20, 2012, Logic officially signed with Visionary Music Group.

Currently, Logic is living a happy healthy life, recently releasing his album Under Pressure. He stays in contact with his father, who is now 60, and has a great relationship with all of his siblings. Logic has come a long way from the kid he was to the successful young man he is now, and it could only be described as well deserved. His touching lyrics and hidden messages in each song set him apart from many rappers, aside from his positive influence.

Logic going hard at The Verge.
