TO HER HIGHNESS

My sister, I salute you.

I salute you for walking the path of the road that is unpaved. I salute you for loving the way God made your curves, for appreciating the sass that slides off your tongue.  Not everyone can multi task by making the world spin, telling the birds to chirp and giving the sun something to rise to, but you do.

You’re fierce when others are timid, excited when others are complacent and command action with something as sweet as your smile.

Like Queen Hatshepsut, you lead when there are no leaders. Like Yaa Asantewaa, you fight, when there are no soldiers. Like Ida B. Wells, you document, what others attempt to overlook. Like Fannie Lou Hamer, you command action with your very presence. Like Betty Shabazz, you know how to be his backbone, when your king takes his power and leads. Like Winnie Mandela, you know how to step up to command the kingdom, when your king has been displaced.

Sometimes you have had to do what no one should ever have to, just to ensure that your offspring survives. You made a way when there was no way, just to give hope to the hopeless.

So, although the media may overlook your strength and prefer one with weakness. Although there may not be a music genre that promotes and appreciates the greatness of you. Although, no one may stop to lend you a helping hand or a simple understanding smile. Understand that the world would not move without you, the sun would not rise without you, the birds would have nothing to sing about without your presence. The world, may seem to have forgotten your greatness, but you are the reason the universe exists.

Thank you.
