A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

"GOOD COP"

I AM A

ATHEIST

- Vernon Heard -

SEPTEMBER  2015

atheist - noun 1. a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

As hard as it is to watch the slaughter of Walter Scott at the hands of Officer Michael T. Slager, it's harder to see evidence planting take place in front of Officer Clarence W. Habersham Jr., without an inkling of protest or reporting the incident. In fact, Habersham lied in his own report stating that he provided CPR to Scott when the video shows he did no such thing.

Read the NY Times article "After Walter Scott Shooting, Scrutiny Turns to 2nd Officer" HERE.

It’s official.  I am now a ‘good cop’ atheist.  I didn’t used to be.  I used to buy into that same mentality "not ALL cops are bad but a few bad apples give the whole group a bad name". Kind of what people should think about Black folks.  I have lately become an unwilling convert to ‘good cop’ atheism.  It simply hasn’t been proven to me that there are good, stand up policemen who would choose honor over the Blue Code of Silence.

Where are the good cops?  In the Black community, I mean.  And I don’t mean the dude who gets out of his car and plays basketball with the neighborhood kids while a camera happens to be rolling.  And not the dude who joins the Cupid Shuffle line at the neighborhood block party and dances real good.

The cop I’m referring to refuses to corroborate false police reports to protect wrongdoing of an officer.  The one who won’t swear on a bible in court then lie to protect another cop or convict someone accused of a crime.  Someone who wouldn’t participate in railroading a crime suspect into jail that they know is innocent or that suppressed evidence exonerates them.

LIKE THESE COPS TRIED TO DO...

MARCUS JETER: NEW Jersey Resident Faced 5 Year Prison Sentence on False Charges

Officers were indicted over this case in which evidence was withheld, false reports submitted, brutality committed and false statements of "quit trying to grab my gun" were sent out over police radio to substantiate false statements that were to be made.  Remember to even utter this during their interaction means there was premeditation for the false report that hadn't even been filed yet.

Most damning of all is that before the exonerating footage came to light, the Bloomfield PD's Internal Affairs division had completed their own investigation and found "NO WRONGDOING" in this case.

Good cops or bad??

If good cops existed there would be support instead of retribution for that rare cop\someone who speaks out about brutality or intervenes when their fellow officers cross the line.

LIKE THESE COPS DID...

CARIOL HORNE:  BUFFALO, NY OFFICER FOR 19 YRS.

FIRED AND PENSION ELIGIBILITY REVOKED FOR INTERVENING WHEN ANOTHER OFFICER WAS CHOKING A HANDCUFFED SUSPECT.

Remember the cop, Clarence W. Habersham, Jr., that stands there as South Carolina policeman Michael Slager guns down unarmed motorist Walter Scott and plants a taser next to Walter’s dead body?  Is Clarence a good cop?  It’s clear Michael wasn’t, since he radioed in a fake “shots fired; suspect down, he grabbed my taser”, but what about the other guy?  When you see a fellow cop falsifying evidence in a possible murder case (and he's the potential suspect, remember) how can you just act chill with it like it’s another day at the office??

How\why did North Carolina officer Randall Kerrick shoot injured and unarmed motorist Jonathan Ferrell 10 times, killing him?  He actually fired 12 times.  Unarmed.  Imagine for a moment how 12 shots being discharged by you feels and sounds.  Mind you, this is a semi-automatic weapon so the trigger has to be pulled 12 separate times.  Count the shots in your head as you imagine yourself pulling the trigger 12 separate times as fast as you can.  That has to be at least voluntary manslaughter when you shoot 12 individual times.  AND, according to reports, the last 6 shots were fired into Ferrell as he was on the ground.  I think non-lethal force could have been used to bring down an unarmed person when several officers are already on the scene.  If you MUST shoot someone from a distance, shoot them in the leg, arm, abdomen.. if your intention is to just stop them from approaching you.  Meanwhile Joseph Parker assaults seven policemen, knocking at least one unconsciou and sending several to the hospital, and not a single shot was fired.  Read that story HERE.  Since the guy lived to be arraigned, perhaps THOSE guys were the good cops I'm seeking.

But I digress.... My point is, it takes some time to dispense 12 bullets.  After a few shots, shooting is not a knee-jerk reaction anymore, if it ever should be one in the first place for a peace officer.  In his testimony Kerrick used all the key words necessary to influence and ensure and the correct perception of the jury and anyone listening or, later, reading a court transcript...  “he wouldn’t stop.  He kept trying to get to my gun. I thought I was gonna die ‘cause nothing I would do would stop him.”

Cops now have the dialogue down pat that exonerates them for murdering citizens.  They’ve upgraded from the "he reached for his waist" to now claiming that suspects are reaching for THEIR waists.  Going for the officer’s gun being an immediate and deserved death sentence.  Cops ensure that they are overheard by dispatchers and dash cam audio claiming that a suspect is going for their gun (see the Marcus Jeter video above).  Also comments to the effect that the suspect is resisting arrest are helpful.  All this audio backed up by a fabricated police report and at least one police witness’ false testimony trumps a citizen’s videotape of an encounter in 90% of cases.  Usually, if the suspect happens to accidentally live, all the bullshit charges the cops accuse the victim of are dropped in exchange for making the complaints and court case against the cops go away.  Where are the "good cops" that are part of this process?  Surely if the corruption and wrongdoing are this obvious from the civilian's point of view it has to be glaringly obvious from within the ranks.  Yet… nothing.  This is organized crime by definition of the RICO statutes.  I akin it to the Catholic church protecting pedophile priests.  You know they are breaking laws, morally and literally, but you help hide their deeds to protect them and the image of the institution while victims pile up left and right?  Where are the "good cops" then?  Where are the "good cops" now?

For the record, anyone who has grown up in or around the “hood” runs AWAY from a person shooting at them, not toward them. Like the North Carolina cop above reported that the person he murdered was charging him and trying to take his gun but he had time to strike his victim 10 times.. after he heard the guy “grunting” (ya know.. like an animal, dear jurors).  Then the victim opts to charge the person pointing a gun at him and doesn’t quit until he’s received ten gunshots from a police issued firearm (probably a 9mm glock).  You ever been shot before?  You ever been shot witih a 9mm handgun at close range before?  Darren Wilson also reported that Mike Brown got into a 3-point stance (ya know… like in football) and charged toward him from 30+ feet away and prompted him to discharge his weapon numerous times before finally felling Mike Brown.  That actually sounds like something you’d see on a safari show on Animal Planet or in a Quentin Tarantino movie.  Cops are out there Cecil The Lion-ing unarmed citizens in the street.  Killing them.  No leg shots or incompacitating them.  Shooting them dead.  Then lying about it.  Protected by a Blue shroud and a corrupt legal system sponsored, in some instances, by corporate prisons.

I think the rumor of "good cops" ranks up there with talk of the Loch Ness Monster, El Chupacabra and Big Foot.  I’ve heard of ‘em and I’ve even seen some blurry pics that SUGGESTS something is out there, but there is no clearcut proof they are out there.  So in my mind, I choose to believe they are ALL murderers or aiders and abettors of perpetrators of these crimes against citizens and especially the Black community.

For cops and cops’ families out there that disagree I challenge you to challenge them to speak out about brutality and killings perpetrated across the country.  They can no longer be classified as isolated incidents.  The officers can’t be classified as 'off the radar' or as rogue officers if your family member has knowledge of their wrongdoing and doesn’t say or do anything.  They are just as complicit in the crimes themselves if they choose to look the other way.  You know how, saaaay.... two people hold up a gas station and one of them kills someone in commission of the crime they can BOTH be charged with murder?  You know how aiding and abetting is a crime when perpetrated by a civilian?  You know how harboring a fugitive is a crime?  I watch enough LAW & ORDER to know that much.  Just think if “quiet” cops were held to that standard when they don’t speak up about crimes they witness officers committing?  What if your family member knew about or was discovered falsifying police reports to cover other officers’ crimes? What if they were held to the same letter of the law and the same severity of punishment as Black people that are herded through the “justice” system (guilty or not)??  Would they be better cops then?  Would they perform with integrity if there were no cameras on?  I think we have the answer to that one already in spite of cameras being on.

You decide for yourself.  Me?  I’m not quite convinced of your existence Good Cop.  Reveal yourself to me.  Otherwise… Ice Cube wrote it; NWA said it..

NOTE:

I feel compelled to add to this article since, in August, my friend, Brig Feltus' family lost a member who died in police custody after being denied meds for diabetes.  His name is Michael Robinson.  It hurt my heart to read Brig's Facebook post:

It's ALMOST too much for my family to bear. But guess what? We are still standing and there is absolutely no question we will get justice for Michael. There is no gray area. They threw away his life like he had no human value whatsoever.

When he screamed in the middle of the second night they secured him to a chair and hosed him down then put him in the hole. He died of cardiac arrest due to deadly high glucose levels. After he died they sent ...him to the hospital and put him on respirator. He was already long dead. Sent him to a second hospital. He was already gone for hours when the second hospital declared him dead. Eyes popping out of his head, glucose level of 2500 (700 is deadly), his head swollen gruesomely.

The family have been terrorized by hostile commentary, people proclaiming boldly that Michael's death was deserved...that his life didn't matter, that they intend to defile his grave.  There are rumors his girlfriend has a jealous ex husband who was former sheriff who had been harassing Michael prior to his arrest. Family members have been followed around by law enforcement and inappropriately contacted.

There is no gray area. This is exactly the horror story it sounds like. The monster is supposed to be protecting life.  At least that's what we are to believe. This monster however is a screwed up system made to replace traditional slavery, to sanction oppression of the poor, and sanctioned murder.

This is real. Not some paranoid conspiracy theory. It has now happened to someone you know. MY family. My blood. Feel it. Then use your voice to speak out.
